More than half of the UK’s small businesses are operated from home, according to research by insurer Direct Line for Business.
It said there are 2.5 million home business owners, representing 8% of the UK’s total workforce and 52% of its small businesses.
The South East and South West regions have the highest concentration of home business owners, both representing a tenth of the total workforce.
More than a quarter (27%) of Hertfordshire’s 92,000 workforce are home business owners, the highest concentration in the UK. It is followed by Pembrokeshire at 23% and Eastbourne at 20%.
Men are more likely to run businesses at home. There are now 1.7 million male home business owners, compared with 818,000 female, across the country.
